This Month's Vinyl Picks: September 2019
The Beatles, Liam Gallagher and Iggy Pop are amongst the best new vinyl releases coming in September...
The Beatles - Abbey Road 50th Anniversary
Apple / UMC
Neither The Beatles nor their final studio album Abbey Road need any introduction from us, but for fans of the Fab Four who've been collecting the recent anniversary editions the September release of the newly remixed version of Abbey Road promises to be one of the most exciting yet.
As with the others released so far, such as Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, the 50th Anniversary edition of Abbey Road benefits from a completely new stereo mix overseen by Giles Martin, son of legendary Beatles producer George Martin. Not only that, there are also stunning new surround mixes in 5.1 and Dolby Atmos, as well as a variety of alternate takes featured on the deluxe versions.
The album is due to arrive in stores on various formats on September 27th, including a standard version on black vinyl featuring the new stereo mixes, a picture disc, and a deluxe vinyl 3LP box set.
Liam Gallagher – Why Me? Why Not
After releasing his solo debut album As You Were in 2017, the former Oasis frontman returns in September with his second full-length effort, Why Me? Why Not, which reportedly takes its name from two John Lennon drawings owned by the singer. Gallagher has recruited producers Greg Kurstin, Andrew Wyatt and Simon Aldred to craft his second album, which includes the singles 'Shockwave', 'Once' and 'The River'.
The album is due in stores on all formats on September 20th, including two vinyl versions. There's a standard black vinyl version, of course, but if you want something a bit special then you might want to opt for the limited edition picture disc version of the album, available exclusively at hmv.
Doctor Who – Death and The Queen
If you've been keeping up with the recent string of Dr. Who audio adventures on vinyl from the folks at Big Finish Productons, then you might be excited about the next in the line of adventures featuring the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) and his companion Donna Noble (Catherine Tate).
Death and The Queen arrives in stores on September 6th in the form of this limited edition LP pressed onto clear vinyl, which is available exclusively at hmv.
Noel Gallagher – This Is The Place EP
Sour Mash / Ignition Records
Not to be outdone by his brother Liam, the elder Gallagher sibling has his own new vinyl release coming in September, namely a 12” EP from his latest musical guise Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds. This Is The Place takes its name from the poem of the same name by Mancunian poet Tony 'Longfella' Walsh, made famous in a public reading broadcast from the city's Albert Square in the wake of the Manchester Arena bombing in 2017.
The third EP Gallagher has released this year following Wait and Return in March and Black Star Dancing in June, This Is The Place arrives in stores on September 27th in the form of a limited edition pressed onto 12”
green vinyl and also includes two other songs besides the title track; 'A Dream is All I Need to Get By' and 'Evil Flower'.
Various Artists - Once Upon A Time in Hollywood
With Quentin Tarantino's latest cinematic opus hitting cinemas in August, the soundtrack was never going to be too far behind and, just like every other Tarantino film, it's a cracker.
The soundtrack for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood includes more than 30 tracks from the likes of The Box Tops, Simon & Garfunkel, Paul Revere and The Raiders, Neil Diamond and Deep Purple, to name a handful, and is set to arrive in stores on vinyl on September 27th in the form of a limited edition 2LP set pressed onto translucent orange vinyl.
Iggy Pop – Free
Former Stooges frontman and 'Godfather of Punk' Iggy Pop returns in September with his 18th studio album, his first solo offering since 2016's Grammy-nominated offering Post-Pop Depression. But if you're expecting something similar to his last album, which was produced by Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme and featured the likes of Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helder, then you might be in for a bit of a surprise. Working with collaborators such as jazz musician Leron Thomas and Noveller (aka Los Angeles-based composer Sarah Lipaste), Iggy Pop has described the new record as "an album in which other artists speak for me, but I lend my voice".
Free is due to arrive in stores on September 6th and will be available as either a standard version pressed onto 180g black vinyl and limited edition pressed onto seas-blue coloured vinyl.
Black Star Riders – Another State of Grace
First formed in 2012 by the most recent line-up of Thin Lizzy when they decided to record new material, Black Star Riders have since churned out three albums and are now gearing up to release their fourth full-length offering.
Another State of Grace arrives in stores on September 6th and is described by guitarist and lead vocalist Ricky Warwick “the best record the band have ever made”. There are no fewer than three different vinyl options, including a standard black vinyl edition, a deluxe box set and a limited edition picture disc featuring the album's artwork.
Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein
Following the return of The Duffer Brothers hit sci-fi series Stranger Things for a third season back in July this year, composers Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein are set to unleash their third album of original compositions created for the series in September.
Containing nearly 40 tracks filled with synth-powered atmospherics, the soundtrack to Season 3 is set to arrive on vinyl courtesy of the folks at Invada Records on September 20th and comes as a 2LP set pressed onto translucent neon pink vinyl, presented in a stunning gatefold sleeve featuring artwork by Kyle Lambert.
The Cult - Sonic Temple 30th Anniversary
30 years on from its initial release, The Cult are gearing up to reissue a special 30th anniversary edition of their 1989 album Sonic Temple, the band's fourth full-length effort and still their most commercially successful. Featuring songs such as 'Fire Woman' and 'Sweet Soul Sister', the album was the first to feature drummer Mickey Curry and also includes an appearance from Iggy Pop, who contributes to backing vocals on 'New York City'.
The 30th anniversary edition of the album arrives in stores on all formats on September 13th, including an expanded 2LP version featuring the album tracks plus six b-sides pressed onto black vinyl, as well as a limited edition box set which includes 3x LPs, a cassette tape and a range of memorabilia from press releases to a laminated backstage pass.
