"We are running our own business now, rather than being just products..." - talks to Collabro

As they release their third album Home, we chat to Collabro's Jamie Lambert about why they decided to go on without Simon Cowell and focus on more musicals...

What did you want to do differently on this album from what you did on Act Two?

"We had full control! We absolutely loved this recording process it was wonderful. We’ve really focused on voices and harmonies rather than adding loads of backing vocals, and the result is beautiful. We can’t wait for people to hear it!"

There are a lot more numbers from musicals on this album, was that something you were all keen to do?

"Yes, that’s why we called the album Home. We feel like we are going home to our preferred genre. Musical theatre is such a beautiful way of telling stories and it’s what we set out to do. We know that it connects with our fans and they wanted more theatre, so that’s what we gave them!"

This is your first album for your own label Peak Productions after leaving Simon Cowell's SyCo label, why did you decide to set up the label and do it yourselves?

"We weren’t short of offers, but we decided to set up our own label because we wanted to give our fans what they want. They’ve always asked for less backing vocals, fewer choirs and more of us, so that’s what we have done. We wanted full creative control, not only over the music but also how the album is released, the press, the marketing, everything."

There must have been more to do to get the album out, though?

"We feel like we are running our own business now, rather than being just products, and that’s an amazing feeling. We have proved to ourselves that we can do it, and there have been some incredibly difficult times, but here we are, with a completed album!"

What was the song that took the longest to get right?

"They all were quite smooth actually, but probably 'Bui Doi'. It’s the kind of song where you can’t stray too far from the original and it has to tell a story – the arrangement was easy but the recording process was more difficult as that story had to come across."

And which was the easiest?

"I'd say 'That's Life' and 'Don’t Rain On My Parade' are both songs we’ve done before so they only took us half a day, which was brilliant! We actually recorded the band first – something we don’t normally do."

Why did you decide on the title of Home?

"Like we said, we just wanted to come home to Musical Theatre. Collabro is home to many of our fans, we are like a big family and we love them!"

Were any other titles in contention?

"Not really, nothing worked until Home came along and we all just looked at each other and knew it was the one we wanted!"

What are your plans to take the record out live?

"We are going on a full UK tour at the end of this year. We can’t wait; live performance is everything to us. We absolutely love it. We thrive off audience reactions and we like to give the best, most exciting rollercoaster of a show to everyone who comes."
