Country music star Merle Haggard dead at 79
American country music legend Merle Haggard has died after battling double pneumonia. He had just turned 79 today.
Celebrity website TMZ confirmed the singer/songwriter’s death with his manager. Haggard was diagnosed with pneumonia last year and had spent 11 days in hospital early this year. Many of his tweets in recent weeks has talked about his illness.
Haggard died at home near Redding, California this morning.
According to TMZ, he'd been battling back from the illness and even scheduled a string of concert dates with his pal Willie Nelson in support of their Django and Jimmie album from last year.
Haggard was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1994. The twitterverse quickly filled with condolences from country music stars:
