Damon Albarn writing a 'family musical'
Fresh from his headline slot at Latitude Festival, where he performed songs from this year's album Everyday Robots, ex-Blur and Gorillaz mainman Damon Albarn has announced that for his next project he's working on a musical that the whole family can enjoy.
Speaking in an interview with The Daily Star earlier this week, Albarn said he wanted to channel “the spirit of Lionel Bart” with his new project: "It’s something I’ve always wanted to do because musicals are great when they’re done well...it was going to be a leftfield, experimental opera. But it's lurched into a mainstream musical for families."
Albarn has form with this kind of work, having already written two operas – Monkey: Journey to the West and Doctor Dee.
The singer-songwriter is currently playing dates in Japan to support his recent LP and a completion date for the new musical has yet to be announced, but if his previous theatrical ventures ar eanything to go by this will be one to watch out for later this year.
