Drake's If You're Reading This It's Too Late: What You Need To Know
A little background...
It seems to be the way these days, particularly if you're a hip-hop or R'n'B artist, but just a few weeks ago, with no warning whatsoever, Canadian rapper Drake released an album full of new tunes online. Some of you will remember us talking about Drake's upcoming album View From The 6 earlier this year. Well, that's still coming, in fact it's due for release later this year too, but in the meantime Drizzy has dropped an all-new mixtape with the catchy title If You're Reading This It's Too Late. Although it has been available on the internet for a few weeks now, from next week (April 27th) you'll be able to get your hands on a physical copy.
So who's producing it?
Drake regulars Boi-1da and Noah “40” Shebib have both made several contributions, as has PartyNextDoor, who guests on three of the album's 17 tracks. Elsewhere there are also production credits for Wondagurl, Frank Dukes, Vinylz, Sevn Thomas and Travi$ Scott, among several others.
Any special guests?
Just a couple this time, in the shape of aforementioned collaborator PartyNextDoor, who contributes vocals on two of the three tracks he is featured on, as well as Lil Wayne, who appears on the album's 11th track, 'Used To'. Other than that though it's Drizzy all the way.
What are the standout tracks?
'Energy', the album's second track, is one of the highlights on Drake's latest offering, based around a simple piano sample, while other standout moments include the Lil Wanye collaboration 'Used To', the smooth R'n'B slow jam of 'Now and Forever' and the atmospheric '10 Bands'.
Does it deliver?
What's really great about this selection of tracks is that there's an immediacy to everything on If You're Reading This It's Too Late that offers something a bit more raw than much of Drake's output. That's not to say it sounds rushed, but there's definitely nothing here that sounds like it's been overthought and, as it turns out, that's a good thing. If this is a collection of songs that didn't quite make it onto his upcoming album, we can only imagine how View From The 6 might be. It stands up by itself, for sure, but it also makes us really, really excited for Drake's next album proper.
If You're Reading This It's Too Late is available in hmv stores from April 20th, but you can also download it now using the download link at the top right of this page...
