Ed Sheeran's ÷ claims Number One spot in UK Album Chart, becomes fastest-selling album by male solo artist ever
It's news that won't come as much of a surprise to anyone who has had half an eye on the UK Album Chart this week, but today it became official: Ed Sheeran's third album ÷ has claimed the Number One spot, breaking several records in the process and becoming the fastest-selling album by a male solo artist in history.
With sales of 672,000 units in its first week, ÷ has become the third-fastest selling album of all time, trailing only Adele's 25 (800,000) and Oasis' Be Here Now (696,000) in first week sales.
Not only that, but Sheeran's third album became the fastest-selling vinyl LP in 20 years and is the first album to have every one of its songs in the Top 20 of the UK Singles Chart simultaneously, according to the Official Charts Company.
Among the many other mind-boggling statistics is the fact that ÷ has outsold the rest of the UK Album Chart's Top 500 put together, as well as breaking Stormzy's recent record for streaming in its first week. Sheeran's previous two albums, + and x, have also jumped up the charts, with all three of his albums in this week's Top 5.
