hmv's Album of the Year 2017 - St. Vincent's MASSEDUCTION
2017 is almost at an end, but what a year it's been for music! There have been so many great records across the year and, just like every year, hmv have rounded up 50 of the best of them for our guide to the Best Albums of 2017. You can pick up your copy in-store now and to celebrate some of the year's best albums we've spent the last couple of weeks talking with some of the artists who've made the cut, including Japandroids, PVRIS, Jane Weaver and Idles, but today it's the turn of this year's winner.
St. Vincent's MASSEDUCTION arrived in October and immediately began winning hearts and minds at hmv. With her record named as our Album of the Year for 2017, we asked its mastermind Annie Clark a few questions about making her latest album with Bleachers mainman Jack Antonoff...
Congratulations! MASSEDUCTION is hmv’s album of the year!
How do you look back on the making of MASSEDUCTION? Was it a difficult album to make?
"I poured everything I had into making this record. But life is hard. Making records is the good part."
How did you want the album to move on from what you did on your self-titled album?
"I wanted to open a vein and let it bleed. Go for the jugular. Open my heart completely."
You made the album with Jack Antonoff, what did he give you as a producer?
"With Jack, irony is the death of music. He is the ultimate cheerleader. The ultimate, "Yes We Can.” That’s the right energy to be surrounded by."
What was the first song that came together for the album?
What’s your favourite memory of making the album?
"I had the words to ‘Happy Birthday, Johnny’ but was struggling with a melody. Jack sat down at the piano and we just finished it in about 15 minutes. Magic."
You’ve got some brilliant guests on the album, how did you decide on who to call for the album?
"People whom I admire, who are changing the landscape of music."
If you had to choose a favourite song from the album, could you?
"I love the downers. ‘Smoking Section’, because it was the first song I ever wrote for the album."
Finally, apart from your own LP, what’s been your favourite album of 2017?
"King Krule’s The Ooz."
MASSEDUCTION is available in hmv stores now, you can also find the album here in our online store...
