hmv.com reviews... Charli XCX @ London's Heaven
Charli XCX, the UK's finest cult popstar, lit up Heaven last night (October 30th) with a stunning show. Thing is, we won't be able to say she's a cult anything much longer...
Charli XCX, real name: Charlotte Aitchison, the UK's finest pop talent. Readying her second record Sucker, which due in January.
Heaven, the dingy London sweatbox under the arches at Embankment.
Was it full? And how were the crowd?
It was absolutely sold out, with touts desperately looking for tickets to flog. The crowd were ace, dancing like wild things from the second Charli took to the stage.
So what was the set like? What did she play?
The set was mostly focused around new cuts from Sucker, which is due next year. She kicked off her set with the title track, a punky finger wagging pop cut, with its ludicrously catchy refrain of "F**k you, Sucker!". She then aired new track 'Breaking Up' before launching into 'I Love It', the track she gave to Icona Pop which ruled last summer.
She worked through some more excellent new cuts, like 'London Queen' and 'Famous' as well as giving her debut album True Romance (which you can preview on the right of the page) its due, with airings of 'Stay Away' and 'Black Roses'. She also treated the crowd to a cover of Barrett Strong's classic 'Money' before belting out a colossal rendition of sassy new single 'Break The Rules'.
She returned for an encore, which she kicked off with an incredible solo run through 'Fancy, her monster hit with Iggy Azalea, before closing with a mighty 'Boom Clap'. It was incredible.
Any good between song banter?
Plenty, but less banter and more geeing up, there was plenty of "Come on London!" and a promise to play here more often. A promise we really hope she keeps.
Did they put on much of a show?
Heaven is a tiny club, so there's not much you can do, but Charli did what she could, sporting the biggest hair her head could fit and dancing like a loon throughout. Her and her band were kitted out in their own bespoke cheerleader outfits, which looked pretty darn cool. There was a little flash of showmanship towards the end, as baloons fell at the end of the first set and some lovely confetti descended as 'Boom Clap' kicked in.
What was the highlight of the set?
The whole thing was beyond brilliant, but her solo rendition of 'Fancy' was something to behold.
Where can I catch her next?
She's on tour across America next month and then heading out a full European tour with Katy Perry next year.
