hmv.com reviews... Kwabs @ London Roundhouse
Kwabs, the soulful Londoner returned to the city over the weekend to promote his debut album Love + War (you can preview and purchase it on the right-hand side of the page) in the penultimate night of his UK tour and we were there to review it…
Kwabena Sarkodee Adjepong, better known as Kwabs, returning to his home city for a sold out show.
London’s Roundhouse, edge of Camden.
Was it full? And how were the crowd?
Pretty near capacity, the standing area was rammed but there were a few seats going spare in the upper levels but a great turn out. The crowd got right behind Kwabs when asked to wave their arms in the air and there were some very energetic fans dancing and singing along.
So what was the set like? What did he play?
It’s quite hard to believe that Kwabs has only just released his debut album because the range in the sound and tone of his tracks is stunning and he showcased them all fantastically.
Throughout the set we get a mix of his more upbeat/electro numbers like ‘My Own’ and of course the fan fave ‘Walk’ where Kwabs and his backing singers showed off their excellent dance moves. Introducing some fun drums and bells into the set, ‘Into You’ brought us some of Kwabs’ African background where the dancing really stepped up a notch. Then for some more stripped back action and he added in some purely acoustic tracks where you really got to hear the full effect of his powerful, soulful voice.
We were also treated to Kwabs’ cover of Major Lazer and MØ’s track ‘Lean On’ as well as a stunning encore that saw him end with a stunning ‘Perfect Ruin’, leaving us all emotional but elated.
Any good between song banter?
Some appreciation for the crowd and introduction for his bands, other than that just the tunes...
Did he put on much of a show?
Just him and his band plus some great light action through each song. There were some excellent dance moves though...
What was the highlight of the set?
Hit single ‘Walk’ was obviously very well received but the stand out moment was when he sang us a stripped back version of ‘Forgiven’ where the crowd went nuts and sang back the powerful lyrics so loudly that it looked like Kwabs was getting slightly choked up by the support. Beautiful moment!
Where can I catch him next?
Kwabs has finished with his UK shows and starts his European tour in November. All the dates are here if you happen to be about...
