hmv.com reviews... Kylie Minogue @ British Summer Time
Kylie Minogue turned Hyde Park into one huge disco as she headlined the third night of British Summer Time, we were there to review it all...
Kylie Minogue, or Kylie as she is simply billed these days. Princess of pop, finishing the end of her turn in support of latest LP Kiss Me Once.
Hyde Park, the garden in the middle of London.
Any good supports?
The eccentric and downright bizarre Grace Jones. Wearing nothing but a corset and a lot of body paint, Jones thrilled everyone for an hour with a set that included 'Pull Up To The Bumper' and 'Slave To The Rhythm'.
Was it full? And how were the crowd?
Unlike Blur the day before which was interrupted by a deluge of rain, it was mostly brilliant sunshine for Kylie, so everyone was very happy. For Kylie, from the second she hit the stage, the place turned into a huge disco, with hands constantly in the air.
So what was the set like? What did she play?
This was a full-on 'Greatest Hits' set, everything from her early days with 'The Locomotion' and the opening 'Better The Devil You Know' to recent hits like 'Into The Blue', which ended up closing the set. She blasted through the likes of 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head', a rousing 'Your Disco Needs You' and a shimmering 'All The Lovers'.
There were also a couple of covers, including a brilliant version of Kim Carnes' 'Bette Davis Eyes' and Kool And The Gang's 'Celebration'. Everything a casual and hardcore fan would want.
Any good between song banter?
Lots of thank you's and plenty of sing-a-longs, more nice chat than banter. She did get the crowd to sing the Neighbours theme tune back to her at one point though...
Did she put on much of a show?
Oh wow! It was a full on carnival, with dancers, a huge disco ball, spectacular lights and endless new routines, it was a hell of a spectacle.
What was the highlight of the set?
The whole thing was one ginormous disco carnival, but 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head' really got everybody going.
Where can I catch her next?
She's got two more European festivals and then that's the end of this tour. She'll be back though, be in no doubt about that.
