hmv.com reviews… The Gaslamp Killer @ Lovebox Festival
The Gaslamp Killer, California-based DJ and producer for acts like Flying Lotus and Gonjasufi
Red Bull Academy Stage @ Lovebox Festival, set in London’s Victoria Park
Was it full? And how were the crowd?
The Red Bull Academy Stage at Lovebox is a large bamboo tent complete with its own Red Bull-shaped glittering disco ball, and while is isn’t one of the biggest stages at Lovebox it was pretty heaving, with a good portion of the crowd getting right into it and busting out some freaky dance moves down near the stage.
So what was the set like? What did he play?
Gaslamp Killer reportedly got his name from playing DJ sets in the Gaslamp district of his native San Diego, where he would “ruin the music vibe” of the clubs with his unique style. His set was packed with the kind of alternative, experimental hip-hop that mashes styles like trap and dubstep together into a chaotic, frenetic mix of deep, filthy basslines and stuttering beats. He played a lot of new music coming out of his own stomping ground of Los Angeles, along with his own remixes of tracks by a wide range of artists including everyone from James Blake to Daedelus.
Any good between song banter?
There was lots of random chatter on the mic, most of which was introducing new music, but he did pause to offer some helpful advice about the festival wristbands: “Festival trick: don’t wear your wristband on your right hand if that’s the hand you wipe your ass with. Wear it on the left.”
We’ll bear that in mind, thanks…
Did he put on much of a show?
This is clearly a guy who really enjoys what he does, and he literally didn’t stop moving the whole way through his set, covering every inch of the stage with his energetic and, at times, downright weird dance moves, but the crowd was really feeding off his energy and it made for a really enjoyable hour of madness.
What was the highlight of the set?
There were lots of strong moments actually, but if we had to pick one then we’d have to say the point when he dropped A$AP Ferg’s ‘Dump Dump’, which had the entire crowd singing along.
Where can I catch him next?
The Gaslamp Killer’s a busy man and he’s doing a range of festivals throughout July that will see him heading to Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany among other, but he’ll be back in the UK on October 4th to play The Oval Space in London.
