hmv.com reviews... The Xcerts @ London's Boston Music Room
The Xcerts, Scotland's finest writers of heartswelling rock and roll, parked up in London last night (December 10th) and blew everyone away. Here's our full review...
The Xcerts, Scottish rockers with a taste for a big, big chorus.
Boston Music Room, a shabby room tucked away just beyond Kentish Town.
Any good supports?
Raw trio Kagoule warmed up for The Xcerts with a spiky set. The threesome blend post-punk and alt-punk together with real bite and vigour. They went down very well.
Was it full? And how were the crowd?
If it wasn't sold out, it was pretty damn close. The crowd were on top form, singing at the top of their lungs from the start to the very, very end of the set.
So what was the set like? What did they play?
The trio cut the set evenly between their three records, kicking off with a volley of new cuts from this year's There Is Only You (which you can preview on the right hand side of the page) and then working their way through a series of highlights from their earlier LPs. A mixture of swelling slow-burners and driving pop rock, tracks like 'I Don't Care', 'Pop Song', 'Slackerpop' and 'Young (Belane)' all sounded particulary stunning. It was a supreme set.
Any good between song banter?
Lots. Frontman Murray Macleod is both full of charm and self-deprecation, bigging up the crowd and also making fun of his band's relatively slow progress throughout the set.
Did they put on much of a show?
The venue was basically a working men's club, so there's not really a chance for any band to put on much of a show. There were some lovely Christmas decorations all around the venue though...
What was the highlight of the set?
That would be when Macleod performed the swelling 'Aberdeen 1987' with the aid of just an acoustic guitar and turned the place into one giant choir. It was wonderful.
Where can I catch them next?
They've got two more dates left on this tour, Manchester tomorrow night (December 12th) and Brighton on Saturdat (December 13th). Get yourself down there!
