hmv.com reviews... Ballet School @ The Great Escape
hmv.com is down on the South Coast as the festival season kicks off with Brighton's new band nirvana The Great Escape. This time we're reviewing Berlin-based electro weirdoes Ballet School...
Ballet School. Electro pop trio, based in Berlin, they make bewitching electronica.
The Green Door Store at the Great Escape.
Was it full? How were the crowd?
It was full to bursting, with many people huddling by the entrance to the venue from the bar to catch a glimpse of the stage. The crowd were reserved and spellbound, as they should have been.
So what was the set like?
Ballet School marry the enormous soundscapes of M83 with the darkness of classic Joy Division and the sheer power of Kate Bush. It's ethereal, bewitching, magical and utterly compelling to watch. Singer Rosie may well be the new Imogen Heap, her vocals are that good.
Any good between song banter?
Lots of platitudes, thank yous and surprise at how packed the place was, which was all very charming.
Did they put on much of a show?
The show took place in the back room of a bar where there was barely room to breathe, no room for theatrics. No need either.
What was the highlight of the set?
'Heartbeast Overdrive' sounded tender and anthemic at the same time, absolutely incredible.
hmv.com will be at The Great Escape across the weekend of May 8th - 10th, bringing you interviews and reviews.
