hmv's Albums Of The Year - Alter Bridge
We've reached the final throes of 2019, an appropriate time to look back at the many excellent LPs that have been released this year.
To celebrate the year and the albums it has produced, hmv have rounded up 50 of the best of them for our guide to the best albums of 2019. It's available to pick-up in store now and, to coincide, we're going to be running interviews with some of the artists who've made the cut.
We continue today with Alter Bridge, their frontman Myles Kennedy looks back on the making of Walk The Sky...
Congratulations, you’re in hmv’s albums of the year, how does it feel?
"Wow! Thank you. That’s pretty amazing. As an artist, it’s always wonderful to hear that your music is resonating at some level. Learning that we made the hmv list serves as a validation that all of the effort we put into the record was worth it in the end. We're honoured to say the least."
How do you look back on the making of Walk The Sky?
"Relative to previous records, it was actually a pretty painless process. In some ways, it was one of the easiest records I can remember making in terms of how quickly the songs took shape. We took a different approach than we had utilised on previous records which I feel paid off in the end. Hopefully, we will continue to integrate that approach into our record-making process moving forward."
Was it a difficult record to make?
"No. Though we had a few hiccups along the way, it was smooth sailing for the most part."
What are your plans for 2020?
"The plan is to tour for the majority of 2020 promoting Walk The Sky. We’re gonna try and hit every corner of the globe playing our music and building new memories with our fan base. It’s gonna be a great year."
How has 2019 been for you? Has it been a good year?
"2019 has been a wonderful year though I will say it’s probably the busiest year I can remember. When it’s all said and done, I will have been on the road or in the studio for over 300 days total since January. Definitely a lot of time away from home."
Moving forward I plan on working at more of a reasonable pace. I feel like I’ve learned a lot about myself during this intense year. It’s been awesome and I absolutely still I love what I do, but I need to be mindful of balancing things a little better."
Aside from your own LP, what has been your favourite album of 2019?
"The record I keep going back and listening to is This Land by Gary Clark Jr. Something about that record continues to draw me back. Maybe it’s because of his incredible voice and guitar virtuosity or maybe it’s because of the artistic statement he made with this batch of songs. I’ve been a fan for a long time but I feel like he really knocked it out of the park with this one."
What about your favourite song?
"'When The Party’s Over' by Billie Eilish is my favourite track of the year. The first time I heard it, it blew my mind. Everything from the melody, sparse production, and arrangement is spot on. That voice! Stunning."
"This is going to sound crazy but I can’t even remember seeing a film this year since I’ve been so busy. I’m looking forward to seeing Joker during my Christmas break."
Favourite TV series?
"That’s easy...Grand Designs! It’s like comfort food for my wife and I. We both think Kevin McCloud does a great job narrating and following the architectural dreams of the people featured in every episode."
Finally, what’s been your moment of 2019?
"The entire year has zipped by! I guess time flies when you are having fun so it’s hard to pinpoint a specific moment. Definitely an awesome year overall. 2020 certainly has a lot to live up to!"
