hmv's Albums Of The Year - Within Temptation

We've reached the final throes of 2019, an appropriate time to look back at the many excellent LPs that have been released this year.

To celebrate the year and the albums it has produced, hmv have rounded up 50 of the best of them for our guide to the best albums of 2019. It's available to pick-up in store now and, to coincide, we're going to be running interviews with some of the artists who've made the cut.

We continue today with Within Temptation and their welcome return with RESIST, we spoke to Sharon den Adel about how they made it...

Congratulations, you’re in hmv’s albums of the year, how does it feel?

"Amazing – it’s a great honour to be nominated! Thank you so much for this."

How do you look back on the making of RESIST? Was it a difficult record to make?

"It was definitely a different album than the ones we’ve done before. It finally came together after a long time – after having suffered from a writer’s block. But when the inspiration finally flowed, it came in a different way: in the meantime, I had done a solo project called My Indigo and that was very helpful to broaden my perspective and get together a different sound for this album. It was an important stepping stone to writing new music for RESIST."

What are your plans for 2020?

"First of all, we are going on tour with Evanescence, then we’re doing three shows in with Iron Maiden in July. And then there are a lot of festivals coming up the next Summer again. In the meantime, we will busy writing new material, but we are not sure when we are going to release this. Keeping busy!"

How has 2019 been for you? Has it been a good year?

"It’s been a very good year: we’ve seen a lot of countries, travelled to many places all over the world and met a lot of new fans. We’ve also played a lot of cool big festivals, for instance, one of the world’s biggest biker-festival in Portugal (Faro) – to name one of the most special ones we’ve done! Oh, and Wacken Open Air, Graspop Metal Meeting and Hellfest were also very special."

Aside from your own LP, what has been your favourite album of 2019?

"Papa Roach – Who Do You Trust?"

What about your favourite song?

"Bring Me The Horizon – Sugar, Honey, Ice & Tea."

Favourite film?

"The Joker."

Favourite TV series?

"We’re now watching a series called The King, I’m in the middle of it, right now. But I also like The Keepers, Vis A Vis and one I really liked was: Dead To Me – it’s an amazing form of humour, kind of sarcastic. Totally suits the type of humour I like! Oh and Afterlife, which I enjoyed also very much. A lot of people find it depressing but I find it very funny."

Finally, what’s been your moment of 2019?

"I think it’s Wacken Open Air because of the intensity of the audience – which was amazing. You saw the audience going up and down like a huge wave."
