hmv's Next Big Thing... #115 Jorja Smith
Every Wednesday we recommend a brand new artist who we think you're going to love. This week we bring you soulful siren, Jorja Smith...
Who Is She?
Two years ago, when she was just 17, Walsall native Jorja Smith was just like any other sixth former, finishing her homework. In this case, her assignment was looking at post-colonialism in grime music for media studies, specifically Dizzee Rascal's music video for 'Sirens'. Suitably inspired by the track she sampled it for her single 'Blue Lights', which she put online.
Now what happened next is not so typical, Dizzee himself found it and put it on his Instagram and Drake aired it on his radio show OVO, bringing to many more ears. There's a lesson about doing your homework in there somewhere...
Who Does She Sound Like?
The key ones are probably D'Angelo and Amy Winehouse, but you can hear plenty of Lauryn Hill and early Mos Def in there too.
Why Should I Be Excited?
The elegance and power of Smith's voice, paired with raw, clipped production, is a hell of a combo.
Can I Hear Something?
