hmv's Next Big Thing... #257 Sports Team

Every Wednesday we recommend a brand new artist who we think you're going to love. This week we bring you eccentric indie types Sports Team...

Who Are They?

Sports Team are a free-wheeling six-piece, consisting of singer Alex Rice, keyboardist Ben Mac, guitarists Rob Knaggs and Henry Young, drummer Al Greenwood and bassist Oli Dewdney.

Formed in 2017 after various members university day were over, the band have toured constantly, releasing an excellent early series of tracks and scoring themselves an arena support tour with Two Door Cinema Club.

Now signed with Universal imprint Island Records, the sextet are preparing their debut album, Deep Down Happy, for release in April.

What Do They Sound Like?

Sports Team blend the ramshackle indie strappings of Pavement and early Sonic Youth, with the eccentricity of Talking Heads and the suave stylings of Pulp.

Why Should I Be Excited?

As you'd expect with a six-piece, Sports Team are a rambunctious outfit. Their music is exhilarating, like a vintage rollercoaster, barely holding together, but completely thrilling at the same time.

Can I Hear Something?

Of course, you can, their new jam 'Here's The Thing' is below for you:
