hmv's Next Big Thing... #36 DOROTHY
Every Wednesday we recommend a brand new artist who we think you're going to love. This week we bring you DOROTHY and their stomping Southern fried rock and roll...
Who Are They?
The band hail from Los Angeles and were formed back in 2013 when singer Dorothy Martin met guitarist Mark Jackson and they began writing together. After recruiting bassist Gregg Cash and sticksman Zac Morris, they recorded a number of singles, all of which went down a treat across the web. After a series of ever more explosive gigs, the band were plucked and are now signed to Roc Nation (the label founded by Jay-Z) and are currently recording their debut full-length effort.
Who Do They Sound Like?
Musically this is pure Southern fried rock and roll, think vintage Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jack White when he really wants to rock out and The Black Keys at their most bombastic. As for Martin's voice, which sounds like it's soaked in cheap bourbon and cigarette smoke, imagine a cross between Janis Joplin and The Kills' Alison Mosshart, so much power and so much character.
Why Should I Be Excited?
Big riffs and Martin's even bigger voice, simple as that.
Can I Hear Something?
You sure can, their new single 'Raise Hell' is below for you and their self-titled EP is available here in our digital store.
