hmv's Next Big Thing... #67 Cullen Omori
Every Wednesday we recommend a brand new artist who we think you're going to love. This week we bring you Cullen Omori, former frontman with The Smith Westerns, who is now going it alone...
Who Is He?
Before he went solo,25-year old Omori spent seven years as the frontman of fuzzed out indie types The Smith Westerns, releasing three albums with the band before they went on indefinite hiatus at the end of 2014. Now solo, signed to Sub Pop, he recorded his debut album with Shane Stoneback, who's worked the likes of Sleigh Bells and Vampire Weekend in the past and about to head out on a European tour.
Who Does He Sound Like?
Like his work with The Smith Westerns, this is drenched in psychedelic rock, so there's plenty of Love and Spiritualized in there as well as some classic 80s synth pop, think Cocteau Twins and and OMD, it blends together beautifully.
Why Should I Be Excited?
Lush soundscapes and Omori's haunting delivery make for an excellent combination.
Can I Hear Something?
Absolutely. His debut album New Misery is out now and available to preview and purchase on the right-hand side of the page.
