hmv tips for 2014… Courtney Barnett
Every day throughout January we're going to be introducing you to a new act who we think are going to everywhere in 2014. Today it’s the turn of Australian singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett, a witty, jaunty singer-songwriter from down under.
Who Is She?
Barnett is a 25 year-old singer-songwriter from Melbourne, who's begun to attract considerable attention in the last few months. Thus far she's released two EPs, I’ve Got A Friend Called Emily Ferris and How To Carve A Carrot Into A Rose, both were lauded and she combined them to make The Double EP: A Sea Of Split Peas, which you can preview by clicking on the icon on the right-hand side of the page.
Who Does She Sound Like?
Imagine Regina Spektor if she ditched her staccato piano playing, spent a lot more time listening to Neil Young and picked up a battered acoustic guitar. She's a funnier Laura Marling and a less raucous Patti Smith as well as a more tuneful Neutral Milk Hotel. All good stuff.
Why Should I Be Excited?
Because she's incredibly witty and knows her way around a chorus. You can never have too much of that…
Can I Hear Something?
Naturally. Check out her single 'Avant Gardener' below.
