hmv tips for 2014… Jhene Aiko
Every day throughout January we're going to be introducing you to a new act who we think are going to everywhere in 2014. Today it’s the turn of rising hip-hop star Jhene Aiko, who you're all going to love…
Who Is She?
Jhené Aiko, or Jhené Aiko Efuru Chilombo as she's known on her birth certificate, is a 25 year-old rapper from downtown Los Angeles. Despite her relatively tender years, Aiko has been a professional musician for the best part of 15 years. She appeared as a guest vocalist on a number of tracks from the boyband B2K, beginning in 2002 when she was just 13 and has contributed guest vocals to a number of other tracks, including cuts by R'n'B singer O'Ryan and P.Y.T.
Her debut album (a radically different debut album) almost came out in 2006, but was shelved after a disagreement with Epic, who were then Aiko's record label. Following this, Aiko took a hiatus from music and resumed her education.
Then, in 2011, Aiko made a shock return to music with a mixtape Sailing Soul(s). The tape featured contributions from the likes of Kanye West, Drake and Miguel and quickly caught the attention of Def Jam Records' man No I.D, who signed her to the label. Her debut EP Sail Out followed in November and her debut full-length Souled Out is set for release in May.
Who Does She Sound Like?
Aiko's new direction is a mixture of low-key hip-hop beats and soul, with clear influences from gospel and R'n'B. Think Frank Ocean, Miguel and Drake (when he's in one of his more reflective moments) and you get the idea.
Why Should I Be Excited?
Because her debut EP Sail Out was tremendous and her album promises to be even better.
Can I Hear Something?
Course you can, her recent single 'The Worst' is below for you.
