hmv tips for 2014… Lowell

Every Wednesday we recommend a brand new artist who we think you're going to love. This week we bring you Canadian singer-songwriter Lowell and her charming brand of ethereal pop…

Who Is She?

Lowell looks for all the world as if she hails from the frosty climbs of Scandinavia, but she's actually from Canada, where's she's just signed to Arts & Crafts, the record label that plays host to the likes of Broken Social Scene and Stars.

She released her debut mini-album If you can, Solve this Jumble back in 2012, a mini-album made with the help of the Apparatjik collective, a so-called supergroup that consists of Magne Furuholmen (keyboardist with A-ha), Jonas Bjerre (singer/guitarist with Mew) and Guy Berryman (bassist with Coldplay) and producer Martin Terefe. She toured incessantly in support of that record and has just put out her second EP, titled 'I Killed Sara V'.

Who Does She Sound Like?

The basic comparisons are fairly obvious, Bjork, Lykke Li, Sia, but there's a lot more than that here, there's the stargazing wonder of Bat For Lashes, the folky pop sheen of Stevie Nicks and touches of Le Tigre in there too.

Why Should I Be Excited?

She's got a hauntingly beautiful voice, a voice full of wonder and intrigue; she's also quite something in the live arena too.

Can I Hear Something?

You most certainly can, her new single 'The Bells' is below for you.
