hmv.com Tips… Max Jury
Every Wednesday we recommend a brand new artist who we think you're going to love. This week we're looking at Americana new boy Max Jury...
Who Is He?
Max Jury is a 21 year old singer-songwriter from Des Moines, Iowa, via the Berkeley School of Music. He’s released two EPs so far, Something In The Air and All I Want: The Sonic Factory Sessions, with ‘Christian Eyes’ from the former breaking through to the BBC 6Music playlist. He’s also been supporting Lana Del Ray on tour.
Who Does He Sound Like?
He’s a self confessed Gram Parsons obsessive, so as you’d expect this is some great, blues-tinged Americana. He’s not just a throwback though – he runs through a line of influences from other indie and alt-country singer-songwriters like Ben Folds and Ryan Adams, creating songs that have both a retro sound yet are also feel fresh, young and dynamic.
Why Should I Be Excited?
Because if he’s this good at 21, who knows how great he could be. He sounds wise beyond his years, and the twang of this guitar has the howl of an old bluesman and not a kid in his early twenties. He taps into the soul of great American music and you can really feel influence of his hometown Iowa plains in his songs. He also has a sly sense of humour and wit in his lyrics - his new track ‘Black Metal’ tells of a girl who “don’t listen to jazz, blues or soul... she listens to black metal all day long.”
And if that’s not enough for you, Russell Crowe even recently tweeted how excited he was about Jury!
