hmv tips for 2014… The Rails
Every Wednesday we recommend a brand new artist who we think you're going to love. This week we bring you The Rails, a duo steeped in folk royalty…
Who Are They?
The Rails consist of Kami Thompson and James Walbourne and they've been playing together for a couple of years now.
Walbourne, despite his relatively tender years, has already established himself as one of the UK's best guitarists and has recorded with the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis, Ray Davies, the Pogues and is now a full time member of Pretenders.
Thompson is the daughter of folk legends Richard and Linda Thompson and has been recording as a solo artist for the last few years as well as touring with the likes of Sean Lennon and Bonnie "Prince" Billy. After a chance introduction, they're now united, both musically and in marriage, as The Rails.
Who Do They Sound Like?
A real mixture of classic folk in the main, think Bob Dylan, early Fleetwood Mac and Nick Drake. There are more modern twists in there too though; you can hear flecks of Bon Iver and Neutral Milk Hotel, even little bits of Laura Marling.
Why Should I Be Excited?
Because they write beautiful, luscious folk songs. That should be more than enough for you.
Can I Hear Something?
You most certainly can. Their recent single 'Bonnie Portmore' is below for you. Their debut album Fair Warning is out on May 5 and can be pre-ordered from hmv stores now.
