"I’d love to sit and spar with guys like Bruno Mars or Robin Thicke" - hmv.com talks to Laidback Luke
Dutch DJ Laidback Luke enjoyed another stellar year during 2013, which saw him tour the world and release huge club hits 'Dynamo' and 'MORE', we sat down with him to find out what 2014 has in store for him, which singers he'd love to work with and how he wound up remixing Robin Thicke's monster hit 'Blurred Lines'.
How was 2013 for you? What were the highlights?
"2013 was another incredible year for me. The productions focused a bit more on the floor side resulting in Pogo, Dynamo with Hardwell and More with Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike to come out. The touring went through like a steam train as usual too."
Recently you collaborated with Hardwell and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, what were they like to work with?
"I really enjoy collaborating and it was incredible to see all those guys grow so quickly, the game flipped around in just a year actually! Hardwell is very talented and we actually sat down in a hotel room together to knock the track out in a few hours. Dimitri and Mike are really good with melodies and through the internet we managed to build the foundation of our track More. Funny note, we managed to finish the final version alongside the pool in Miami only a few hours before we went and performed it the three of us at Ultra mainstage."
What are you working on at the moment? When can we expect your next release?
"Absolutely! I’m very happy with my current single Collide being out that I did together with Project 46 and Collin McLoughlin. And I have more of that on the way. I’m currently in a process of making 20 tracks in 20 days. It’s quite the challenge! But, as I’m talking to you for this, I’m on track 14 of day 15 now. Working hard to keep on schedule!"
Are there any new remixes from you in the pipeline? What can we expect to hear next?
"There’s a couple of requests that came in that we are looking at at the moment. My next one out will be for Tom Staar - Trident. I love the original and asked him if I could remix it. I actually just hit the one million likes on Facebook and to celebrate that, I made a 2014 edit of my classic track called My G.O.D. (Guns On Demo). You can get a free download of that here."
Your 'Blurred Lines' remix was a huge hit in clubs, what was that track like to remix?
"It’s a funny story as I came into the office of Interscope in LA saying I’d love to work with Robin Thicke one day. Mind you, at that time, Robin Thicke needed a comeback and had less Twitter followers than me! They told me a new track of his called Blurred Lines was buzzing at the moment and if I’d be able to jump on the remix! It was still an unknown track by then and I just took the parts that I thought would work well in the clubs. In my first version I actually had a breakdown to the original track because I liked it that much. But the record company wanted me to take it out, so it became a much dubbier remix than I intended."
Last year you launched your own 'Ones To Watch' record label? How's that going?
"It’s been going really well! What people don’t know and realize is, that Ones To Watch is the same exact outlet as my other label Mixmash records. Having two labels is just more convenient to be able to release the mass amount of great demos we get!"
What have been some of your favourite new tracks from the past year?
"The track I was blown most away with was ‘Flute’. I’m surprised no one really jumped on grabbing more alternative sounds and instruments in EDM yet. I’m currently making a few demos that are taking that sound further!"
Are there any up and coming DJs people should be on lookout for?
"We have a huge army of new talent on the way and a few guys that have been amazing me this year are UK’s own DOD, we have Juyen Sebulba, Shelco Garcia & Teenwolf, Moska, Uberjakd and Revero. Deorro and GTA are from our camp too, but they both had a really massive year!"
If you could make a track with any vocalist, who would you choose?
"I’d love to sit and spar with guys like Bruno Mars, Justin Timberlake or Robin Thicke. I like that funky edge they bring!"
Finally, where is your favourite place in the world to DJ?
"Anywhere it goes off!"
