Lady Gaga & Tony Bennett’s Love for Sale: What You Need To Know
Perhaps one of the more unlikely duos to enjoy chart success in recent years, Lady Gaga and jazz legend Tony Bennett bonded over a love of jazz standards that eventually saw them release their first album of duets together, Cheek to Cheek, back in 2014.
Now the pair have reunited for a second album of cover versions, this time dedicated specifically to the songs of American composer Cole Porter. Announced in August this year, Love for Sale arrives in stores this Friday (October 1) and sees the pair adding their own twist to a series of Porter’s best-loved tunes.
Here’s everything else you need to know…
A little background…
Although some seven years have passed since the release of their first album together, according to Lady Gaga herself plans for a follow-up up were almost immediately in gestation, commenting on Twitter earlier this year: “The day we released Cheek to Cheek in 2014, Tony Bennett called me and asked me if I wanted to record another album with him, this time celebrating the songs of Cole Porter. I'm always honored to sing with my friend Tony, so of course I accepted the invitation.”
Sadly, it’s also likely to be Tony Bennett’s last album; at the age of 95, and with a recently-revealed diagnosis for Alzheimer’s disease, the legendary jazz singer will call time on a stellar career that has spanned more than 70 years and the new offering with Lady Gaga is to be his last recording.
Who’s producing it?
The album was recorded at New York’s storied Electric Lady Studios, with production duties overseen by Tony Bennett’s son, Dae Bennett.
Any special guests?
Nope, it’s just Tony and Gaga all the way here. They really don’t need any help anyway...
What does it sound like?
On the standard edition there’s everything from gloriously swinging, big band renditions of the title track and ‘Let’s Do It (Let’s Fall In Love)’, a tender Gaga solo version of ‘Do I Love You?’ and a storming Bennett solo performance of ‘Just One of Those Things’, while on the deluxe edition there’s also a wonderfully executed, upbeat rendition of ‘ I Get a Kick out of You’, with is worth the extra few quid on its own.
Does it deliver?
If you enjoyed Cheek to Cheek, a Cole Porter fan, or even if you’re just a fan of either singer in general, you’ll probably find plenty to enjoy about the new album too. Even with their obvious talents as artists in their own right, as a duo they’re a class act and as a tribute to one of the genre’s greatest songwriters, Love for Sale is as fitting a curtain call as any on for Tony Bennett’s extraordinary career.
Love for Sale is available in hmv stores from Friday October 1 - you can also find it here in our online store.
