My Record Collection by Amorphis's Esa Holopainen

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of Finnish metal veterans Amorphis and their guitarist and key songwriter Esa Holopainen, let's see what he goes for...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"It was Powerslave by Iron Maiden, released in 1984."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"To be honest, I would have to say Powerslave by Iron Maiden again!"

The record I've played more than any other is…

"Definitely Deep Purple’s Perfect Strangers. Another album released in 1984. That was a good year."

The record that always makes me feel good is…

"That’s easy, the same answer again Perfect Strangers by Deep Purple."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"This is a tough question. I’d probably have to say Metallica's Master of Puppets because it’s one of the best metal albums ever. Classic, good, upbeat songs that definitely don’t make me feel sad!"

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"I think it’s the album The Snow Goose by Camel. I think the whole band was so underrated."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"I always loved the old Iron Maiden album covers with all of their intricate details. I’d say the cover for Somewhere in Time by Maiden is probably my favourite. I remember checking the album cover art out a lot when I was a kid. I always spotted little details here and there!"

The record with my favourite title is…

"I don’t know if it’s my favourite, but it’s one that I like a lot. It’s The Hellacopters’ album By the Grace of God. I think that’s a pretty ambitious title!"

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"OK, now I’m going to make everyone in the UK hate me, but I think my answer is every Beatles album. They’re not bad… just a little overrated, in my opinion!"

The last record I bought was…

"It was Roger Waters’ Is This the Life We Really Want?"

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2018 is…

"This year? Hmm, I don’t know if it will happen this year, but Tool are probably releasing a new album. Then there’s A Perfect Circle – I’m looking forward to hearing that new record."

The greatest record of all time is…

"The best album ever? That has to be Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon. I got hooked by Dave Gilmour’s guitar playing and the whole atmosphere and the psychedelia. It’s definitely my all-time favourite."

Amorphis's new album Queen Of Time is released on May 18th and is available to pre-order here in hmv's online store.
