My Record Collection by Aquilo's Tom Higham

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of Tom Higham, half of dream-pop duo Aquilo, let's see what he goes for...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"I'm pretty sure the first record I ever bought with my own money was Is This It? by The Strokes. I can remember being on the way to school and my friend playing it to me on their MP3 player. I took the long way home from school that afternoon to go to hmv and bought it."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"I remember listening to Audioslave on my walkman CD player and thinking 'I wanna make music like this!'. Absolutely loved their self-titled album. They definitely played a part in inspiring me to make a band back in the day."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"The record I’ve played more than another would probably be Kendrick's Lamar's Good Kid, m.A.A.d city. We were both absolutely blown away by it."

The record that always makes me feel good is…

"I’d say Sigur Rós’ Takk would be the album that makes me feel good. I get that’s it’s very emotional, but it kind of gives me a euphoric feeling."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"The records I turn to when I’m feeling down is Explosions In The Sky's The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place. Or anything by The National. That shit hurts my soul."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"The most underrated album is Depression Cherry by Beach House. We’ve both been massively inspired by this album and hold a special place in our hearts."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"Tame Impala's Innerspeaker has the best album artwork, hands down. If you disagree, you're wrong."

The record with my favourite title is…

"Best album name would go to Todd Terjeee for It’s Album Time. We’d play this to death when we we’re on tour."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"The record I can’t understand why everybody loves is Dua Lipa's Future Nostalgia. We really like her and everything she stands for. Just not sure why it’s popped to so much. But hey ho, it’s just a taste thing I suppose."

The last record I bought was…

"The last record I bought was Untitled (Rise) by SAULT. Oh my! It’s actually gold. The mystery behind it all is just fascinating. 'Wildfires' is an actual banger."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2021 is…

The record we’re most looking forward to in 2021 is ‘A Safe Place To Be’ ‘Aquilo’. You're gonna love it."

The greatest record of all time is…

"For me, the greatest record of all time is Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon. Both our dads played this record when we were young. We love it now just as much as we loved it then. It never gets old."

Aquilo's new album, A Safe Place To Be, is released on October 14th. You can pre-order it here in hmv's online store.
