My Record Collection by Baby Strange's Johnny Madden

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of alt-rockers Baby Strange and their frontman Johnny Madden, let's see what he chooses...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"It's O.P.M - 'Heaven Is A Half Pipe'. I still have it. What a tune. Makes me feel so nostalgic every time I hear it!"

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"It's Is this it by The Strokes. That record really taught me about simplicity and good hooks, something I’ve really adapted in my songwriting."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"Iowa by Slipknot. I listened to that album an unhealthy amount when I was younger."

The record that always makes me feel good is…

"I'd go with Suck It And See by Arctic Monkeys. Their best album in my opinion. It’s maybe not the happiest album out there but there’s something about it that puts me in a good mood. Maybe it’s nostalgia."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"There are parts of The Joshua Tree by U2 that are the best thing to listen to when you’re feeling down. Sad songs that are also uplifting, it's a great combination."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"Djo - Twenty Twenty. I love this album so much. Amazing production, great songwriting. I’d jump at the chance to see him live."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"The Clash - London Calling. Straight up energy! I’ve never seen a cooler album cover."

The record with my favourite title is…

"The artwork for Drone Logic by Daniel Avery is amazing. It’s really simple, but there’s something about it that grabs me. Such a great album too."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"Anything by Pearl Jam. Just don’t get why they are as big as they are. Glorified pub band."

The last record I bought was…

"Welfare Jazz by Viagra Boys. If you haven’t heard this album I highly recommend it. Super exciting band with great energy."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2021 is…

"Fabric Bear’s new EP. A band going from strength to strength and one of my favourites in Scotland. Maybe I’m biased because I co-produced it, but it really is amazing!

The greatest record of all time is…

"A second time I’ve answered this but in my opinion Is This It by The Strokes is the greatest of them all. It has had the biggest impact on my life and it still sounds as fresh as ever."
