My Record Collection by Blonde

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of dance duo Blonde, let's see what they choose...

Check out a selection of Blonde's picks in this playlist...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

Jake (Manson): "It was Eminem's 'The Way I Am', I got it in Woolworths when I was nine. It was right between the pick and mix and the Spiderman pyjamas."

Adam (Englefield): "Mine was the Smurfs Go Pop compilation. Every hit from 1997 covered by the Smurfs."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

Jake: "Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland. My dad gave me this on CD the same year, I fell in love with it. I picked up an old bass guitar which was gathering dust in a cupboard in our house and taught myself all of Noel Redding's parts."

Adam: "Led Zeppelin - Black Dog. My mum got me into Led Zeppelin from a young age and I remember air guitaring the riffs in the mirror, thinking I was Jimmy Page."

The record I've played more than any other is…

Jake: "This is Fleetwood Mac - Rumours. I have my dad to thank for this one, he showed me the Chain and then I bought a vinyl copy from a flea market and listened through the whole thing. Incredible record."

Adam: "George Michael - They Won't Go When I Go. It's a cover of a Stevie Wonder record.Stevie'ss writing coupled with George's incredible voice. It's an amazing combination!"

The record that always make me feel good is…

Jake: "Paul Simon - Graceland. It's sonic sunshine, absolute classic."

Adam: "ELO - Mr Blue Sky. Probably the happiest song ever made? Put this on in the morning when you wake up and I guarantee you it’ll be a great day."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

Jake: "Always Blur's 13. "It's over, you don't need to tell me, I hope you're with someone who makes you, feel safe in your sleeping tonight, I won't kill myself, trying to stay in your life, I got no distance left to run" - most heartbreaking lyric of all time, 'No Distance Left To Run', 'Tender', such an emotional record."

Adam: "Bombay Bicycle Club - Flaws. I think sometimes nothing beats a beautiful song stripped back and accompanied only by an acoustic guitar. This is my go to when I’m feeling down in the dumps."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

Jake: "Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea. Woefully underrated, a beautiful, fuzzy, lo-fi record, I absolutely love it."

Adam: "Basement Jaxx - Rendez-Vu. I think its underrated because it was one of Basement Jaxx’ s earlier works but having listened back to it a lot recently I think its one of their finest."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

Jake: "The Strokes - Is This It. My best mate Roly's brother Tom had this as a poster in his room when we were 10/11. I thought it was naughty but compelling."

Adam: "The Beatles - Revolver. I’m a big lover of illustration and this cover art is timelessly brilliant."

The record with my favourite title is…

Jake: "Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band - The Doughnut in Granny's Greenhouse. I mean what's not to love..."

Adam: "Arctic Monkeys - You Probably Couldn't See For The Lights But You Were Looking Straight At Me. Who says you can’t use a whole sentence as a song title eh?"

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

Jake: "Adele - 'Hello'. It's just not my jam."

Adam: "Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes - 'The Time Of My Life'. I really don’t like the film Dirty Dancing and every time this comes on at a party or event I just cringe into a ball."

The last record I bought was…

Jake: "Jon Hopkins - Immunity. Beautiful self-indulgent noises from an absolute sound design wizard."

Adam: "Sampha - Process. I’ve literally been waiting for this album since his Dual EP. It did not disappoint."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2017 is…

Jake: "Queens Of The Stone Age - Villains. I keep going back to Songs for the Deaf, I really hope Villains is in the same vein because the world needs more big riffs right now."

Adam: "Lucy Rose - Something's Changing. Another blast from my past. I love Lucy's voice and songwriting so I can’t wait to hear where she has taken this new album."

The greatest record of all time is…

Jake: "Joni Mitchell - Blue. Sublime songwriting from one of the greatest of all time."

Adam: "Daft Punk - Discovery. This album transformed my taste and got me into electronic music for the first time. Every track is incredible."
