My Record Collection by Blood Red Shoes' Steven Ansell

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of alt-rock duo Blood Red Shoes and their drummer Steven Ansell. Let's see what he picks out...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"It was Michael Jackson's Bad. I bought it on cassette from Our Price and I have no idea how I had any money for it, I must have nicked some cash from my parents’ sock drawer. Eight-year-old me was really into putting it on and dancing along."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"The Sex Pistols' Never Mind The Bollocks. My dad dug out his old vinyl and played it to me as an early teen and I immediately chopped up all my clothes and put them back together with safety pins and decide to start a band. That was despite not playing, or even owning, an instrument..."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"Has to be PJ Harvey's Rid Of Me. Every time I listen it hits me with the same emotional force as when I first heard it."

The record that always makes me feel good is…

"'Demidevil' by Ashnikko. She’s the new Eminem to me. Intelligent, witty, provocative, the beats are hard as f**k, all the things music should be. It’s so badass it will always make you feel pumped."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"Probably the only time I ever stop being engaged with music is when I am down. I don’t listen to anything at all when I feel down. That’s how I know I am down."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"All five Blood Red Shoes albums. For real. If you think that sounds lame then go check our YouTube comments. It’s been the most common message we get on social media for a decade, “most underrated band ever”. Every day we get people messaging saying “How have I only just heard you? Why don’t more people know about you?” We have been overlooked by mainstream media for 15 years despite putting out consistently great records. At this point, we’re one of the most underrated bands ever."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"The Slits' Cut. This band were so far ahead of their time in every way. The cover is them topless covered in mud, but it’s not remotely sexual, it’s like these tough confrontational tribal leaders who are here to f**K you up, just staring you out. Amazing."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"The first Arcade Fire album. I think I’m missing some DNA or something because everyone seems to love it but I find it teeth-grindingly cheesy. Weirdly I quite like some of their other ones, just that first one, ouch..."

The last record I bought was…

"Mogwai's As The Love Continues. I’ve been a fan of this band for 20 years when I heard they were close to getting a Number One album i immediately went and bought two copies.

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2021 is…

"The new Tyler, The Creator album. I thought his last one Igor was his best so far, and I like that you never quite know where he’s going to turn with each release."

The greatest record of all time is…

"Funhouse by The Stooges. Yes, everyone says that, but that's because it’s the f**king truth!"
