My Record Collection by Callum Beattie

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of hotly-tipped troubadour Callum Beattie, let's dive in...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"This was Travis' The Man Who. This was a real lesson in songwriting for me. It’s inspired me to write songs that everybody can sing along and have big anthemic choruses. It's inspiring that a wee country like Scotland still produces some of the best music in the world."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"I'd say Stereophonics' Word Gets Around. My older brother introduced me to this album. I loved the small town lyrics that I could connect with. Made me want to start a rock band at the school."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"This would be Fleetwood Mac's 'Little Lies'. It's a great wake up tune. Has a beat that never stops from the start. Perfect start to a day."

The record that always makes me feel good is…

"I'd have to say Hall & Oates' 'You Make My Dreams Come True'. I love this track and have some great memories. One of the only tunes that makes me wanna dance like my dad."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"This is Coldplay's Parachutes. Chris Martin knows how to make a record work and Parachutes is a great chill out record helps to clear your mind."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"Glasvegas's self-titled album. I think this album was so unique. The lyrical content is heartbreaking and talks a lot about growing up in Scotland. It definitely taught me a few things about myself."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"I'd say Bruce Springsteen's Born In The USA. It’s just an iconic image. Very cool and tasteful. It’s a timeless cover that has become a rock ‘n’ roll icon."

The record with my favourite title is…

"Right Said Fred's 'I'm Too Sexy'. It is not the type of lyric I would tend to associate myself with but you’ve gotta hand it to them. Mad that Taylor Swift sampled the track in her single."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"Aqua - 'Barbie Girl'. Okay, maybe play it once for a laugh in your own time but when gets played at people’s parties it makes me wanna go home."

The last record I bought was…

"Biffy Clyro's Ellipsis. I love Biffy I remember jumping on stage with them in a tiny little venue in Edinburgh before they hit the big time. I’ve been a fan ever since that gig really."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2018 is…

"Moby's Everything Was Beautiful And Nothing Hurt. As far as I’m aware moby hasn’t had a record out for a while. I hoping it hits the same heights as his Play album. Play was a stand out album."

The greatest record of all time is…

"I've got to say The Beatles and Revolver. What’s not to love? The songs. The recordings. I can’t wait to have my own album sitting alongside it on the alphabetical artists in music stores. Beattie...Beatles...Yes!"
