My Record Collection by Cassia's Jacob Leff

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of angular indie trio Cassia and their drummer Jacob Leff. Let's see what he goes for...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"I think the first one I ever bought myself was when I was 10 or 11, it was The Trick to Life by The Hoosiers, the one with ‘Goodbye Mr A’ on it."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"Weirdly I didn't see myself being in a band until I was already in one. I remember hearing Back in Black by Amy Winehouse and just thinking, I’ve got to do that..."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"Probably Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys or Brown Sugar by D’Angelo. I had huge D’Angelo phase when I was 17/18..."

The record that always makes me feel good is…

"Probably a Paul Simon record. I think I'd go for Rhythm of the Saints!"

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"At the moment, it's probably Khruangbin - The Universe Smiles Upon You."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"Not underrated but most people who live in the West have never heard the likes of Fela Kuti, Ebo Taylor and loads more coming out of West Africa a few decades ago. Wish more people celebrated that music because it's completely amazing."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"Some of the Talking Heads ones are pretty sick. I love Paul Simon’s Graceland cover, changes a lot though. Actually, El Camino by The Black Keys is sick."

The record with my favourite title is…

"Got to Paul Simon's Rhythm of the Saints, I think that's just mint."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"Not generally a fan of some mainstream pop music today - the stuff you hear a lot in chart shows, I get why people like it but it’s not for me really. Too much of the same vibe coming from too many people."

The last record I bought was…

"I can't remember because I haven't managed to get to a record store in a month or so, I got a signed copy of Cave Rave by Crystal Fighters when we were on tour though… that was cool."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2019 is…

"It looks Tame Impala are going to bring one out soon so I'm psyched for that."

The greatest record of all time is…

"There are so many. The Beatles, Brian Wilson, Bob Marley. People who changed the game for me and a load of other people even if they don't realise it."

Cassia's debut album Replica is out now in hmv stores.
