My Record Collection by Catching Flies

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of George King, better known as dance maestro Catching Flies, let's see what he opts for...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"It was The Marshall Mathers LP. Whenever I see the cover it takes me right back to going to Tower Records (sorry HMV!) in Camden Town and spending my pocket money on CDs. In fairness, I did the same at HMV on Oxford Street. I also bought my first ever CD rack there - it was a proud moment!"

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"Chick Corea/Return To Forever’s ‘Spain’ or ‘500 Miles High.’ The whole album, Light As A Feather, always blows my mind. The musicianship on the record is amazing - the keys, the vocals, the drums… as is the line-up, including Airto Moreira on drums, who makes great tunes in his own right. This record also made me fall in love with the sound of the Rhodes and made me want to start playing keys."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"Chick Corea’s ‘Crystal Silence.’ It always seems to come on at the right time. I was driving through North America in the snow at twilight a couple of months ago and had a moment with it. But it also works in the sun!"

The record that always makes me feel good is…

"Has to be Dawn Penn - ‘You Don’t Love Me.’ Despite the fact, it’s actually quite a sad song. Or Margie Joseph’s ‘Let Stay Together’ - a wicked cover of the Al Green tune."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"Jaga Jazzist's 'Swedenborgske Rum.’ The way it builds gets me every time. Nine minutes of goodness. It just keeps going and going."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"I'd say this is Ty and Upwards. It's such a seamless and timeless fusion of soul, funk, hip hop, jazz, broken beat, you name it, it's probably in there. I still listen to it these days and it still sounds fresh and really ahead of its time. It was one of the records that made me want to start producing."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"I'd pick Hank Mobley’s ‘Thinking of Home’ (the Blue Note Japanese Edition). What a cover."

The record with my favourite title is…

"I like the name of lots of Four Tet records. Leila Came Round And We Watched A Video, She Loves To Fight, There Is Love In You. Also, a tune by Analogue Dear called ‘You Were Only but a Dreamer, Trying to Be Forgotten.’ He’s got a remix on my forthcoming Silver Linings remix album."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"I’ve never really got the whole Oasis thing if I’m honest. I know that's controversial..."

The last record I bought was…

"It was O’Flynn - ‘Aletheia.’ I’ve had it on repeat. Came out on Silver Bear in 2019. The title track is great, as is ‘Sunspear’ (I had hoped to be playing it a lot this Summer) and ‘Aeolian’ for the quieter moments."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2020 is…

"The new Brian Eno album and the new Thundercat album."

The greatest record of all time is…

"Minnie Riperton’s Adventures In Paradise LP. I recently rediscovered it when I was travelling through Los Angeles and had a few days in Joshua Tree. There was a turntable in the Airbnb with a small selection of records, one of which was Adventures In Paradise. I spent a few days looking out at the desert and listening to it. The title track is amazing."

"I listened to the album a lot in my late teens at a similar time that I was getting into hip-hop, and started making the sampling connections - ‘Baby, This Love I Have’ was sampled by A Tribe Called Quest, and Pete Rock. Also, Kenny Dope sampled ‘Inside My Love’ on ‘Get On Down,’ and that’s one of my favourite Hip Hop instrumentals of all time… so everything seems to be linked and connected."
