My Record Collection by Dakota Jones' Tristan Carter-Jones

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of Tristan Carter-Jones, leader of soul outfit Dakota Jones, let's see what she opts for...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"The first record I ever bought with my own money was 702 by 702. From the moment that I heard 'Where My Girls At,' my eight-year-old self was totally sold."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"The record that made me want to be in a band was Blood Sugar Sex Magik by Red Hot Chili Peppers. I fell in love with that album through watching “Funky Monks,” the documentary that follows the making of the record, and knew that I desperately needed to get a band together and record an album in a haunted Los Angeles mansion ASAP."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"It's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy by Kanye West. This record completely changed my life from the opening song. I cried like a little baby watching the accompanying music video for the album, there’s just something truly perfect and special about every last song."

The record that always makes me feel good is…

"Tell Me Something Good by Rufus. It doesn’t get much sexier than Chaka Khan and Rufus panting into your headphones. No matter where I am, this record transports me to dancing around my house in my skivvies, feeling nothing but pure joy."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is Back to Black by Amy Winehouse. Amy just gets it, whatever “it” is. She backs up and validates your emotions no matter where you’re at."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"The record I think is the most underrated of all time is anything by Kimbra, she deserves so much more hype than she receives. Vows and Golden Echo are some of my favourite records ever, and I just think that Kimbra is one of the under-recognized legends!"

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"Bitches Brew by Miles Davis. Instantly recognizable, warm, and as powerful-looking as the music sounds. The cover of Bitches Brew is like a herald, the first image that you see of a record that changed the landscape of music."

The record with my favourite title is…

"Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols. Straight, no chaser, just like I like it."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"The Wall by Pink Floyd. I’ve just never been able to find my moment with this record, but I do revisit it from time to time, waiting for it to sneak up on me and claim me like it has so many others."

The last record I bought was…

"The last record I bought was Live at the Harlem Square Club, 1963 by Sam Cooke. Arguably one of the greatest live albums of all time, you get to hear Sam Cooke sing in a way that’s so the opposite of his pretty little love songs, you get to hear a whole new, gut-wrenching side of the man."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2020/2021 is…

"Whatever Frank Ocean puts out next. He’s consistently given us some of my favourite records of all time, and I wait with bated breath to hear whatever offerings he has for me, no matter how long it takes!"

The greatest record of all time is…

"The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill by Lauryn Hill. You could spend days, months, and years breaking down the genius of this record line by line. It just hits differently than anything that I’ve ever heard, each listen is a blessing to the ear and it never gets old for me."
