My Record Collection by Demob Happy's Matt Marcantonio

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of alt-rockers Demob Happy...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"The Strokes' Is This It? I heard my mate playing it round his house and it blew my mind. It didn't exist via my parents or my brothers so I had to buy it!"

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"Queens Of The Stone Age's Songs for the Deaf. I heard 'No One Knows' on MTV, but forgot its name and searched for months to find the album. It was the most brilliant thing I'd never heard. Modern kids will never understand."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"The Beatles' Abbey Road. Doesn't require much explanation this one really. Its legacy speaks enough."

The record that always make me feel good is…

"Supertramp's Breakfast in America. I love every second of this album, and miming along to the keyboard solos makes me feel alive."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"This is The Chemical Brothers' Surrender. It's incessant and hypnotic and it gets my blood moving."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"I'd have to say Lindisfarne - Nicely Out Of Tune. A local Newcastle band that we all love. Their harmonies and the songwriting is amazing, but people unfortunately know them for a certain song that wasn't on this album."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"Miles Davis' Bitches Brew. It's just a great piece of psychedelic, space-prog art."

The record with my favourite title is…

"This has to be Charles Mingus's Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus. Could you have any more Mingus? Maybe one more Mingus? Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus? Too much Mingus?"

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"Anything by The Smiths. As a band, we've just never ever been fans. Whatever, it's not for us."

The last record I bought was…

It was Death From Above's Outrage! Is Now! I love everything DFA do, and the new album took them new places and I loved that too."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2018 is…

"Unknown Mortal Orchestra's Sex and Food. Last album was a cool new vibe, so hopefully, this one will keep that up. Fingers crossed."

The greatest record of all time is…

"Got to be 10CC's Original Soundtrack. 'Une Nuit a Paris' did the 'Bohemian Rhapsody' thing years before Queen. Plus it has 'I'm Not In Love' on it. It's a masterpiece."

Demob Happy's new album Holy Doom is out now and available here in hmv's online store.
