My Record Collection by Fenne Lily

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of rising songstress Fenne Lily, let's see what she picks out...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"The Velvet Underground - Loaded. It was on bright pink vinyl and I saved up the money to buy it by washing flower pots."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"This was Kurt Vile's Wakin on a Pretty Daze. My best friend at the time was massively into chilled psych-rock stuff and introduced me to a lot of music I have to thank for picking up a guitar."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"This is probably Alas I Cannot Swim by Laura Marling. There was a period of about three months when I was 15 where I would listen to it in its entirety to and from school. It was the closest to obsession I think I've ever come."

The record that always makes me feel good is…

"The Cribs, Ignore The Ignorant. It reminds me of the first kind-of-boyfriend I had at 15 and thinking I was finally an adult because he lived far enough away to warrant an overnight bag - he was very much into acoustic stuff and I saw myself as a bit of a renegade because I could shout-sing all the lyrics to these songs that contained words like 'aborted'."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"At the moment, this is Phoebe Bridgers' Stranger in the Alps. It doesn't bring me up but it helps me wallow and feel less alone."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"Down Like Gold by Champs. Maybe not underrated as much as underheard, but it's start to finish perfection and they're two of the most talented people I know."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"Alex G's Trick. Whose dog is that and why is it in a church. Rad."

The record with my favourite title is…

"Aldous Harding's Party. It's such a juxtaposing title for such a darkly self-reflective piece of work. And it's just a great word, I have it tattooed on my arm."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"Anything by Morrissey."

The last record I bought was…

"Bonny Doon's latest record. I heard one track off it in a pub and without listening to anything else by them I bought the record the next day. It doesn't disappoint. I love every second of it. And the last track is the sonic equivalent of having a bath fully clothed."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2018 is…

"I think Big Thief are making their third record at the moment? It probably won't be out this year though. So Matt Maltese's debut. I have told him this but I used to not like him at all, after supporting him a few times. But then we ended up in a sex club together in Hamburg and now we're firm friends."

The greatest record of all time is...

"That's an impossible question. Unless you've heard The Railways of Ascot, Field Recordings from the BBC Archives. And I have."

Fenne Lily's debut album On Hold is out now and available here in hmv's online store.
