My Record Collection by Frankie Cosmos's Greta Kline

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of surftastic Frankie Cosmos and their singer Greta Kline, let's see what she picks out...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"I don’t know for sure, but one physical record I have a distinct memory of buying when I was about 14 was Pretend You’re Out Of Control by No One And The Somebodies."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"Magic Pictures by Kate Ferencz. The style of the recording and performance made this really inspiring and encouraging to me, because it felt really homemade and didn’t sound like anything else."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"I would guess Hi-Fi Snock Uptown by Michael Hurley. It never gets old."

The record that always makes me feel good is…

"Love is Overtaking Me by Arthur Russell. Those songs are all just so damn good."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"Bonito Generation by Kero Kero Bonito! One time before a show, I was crying and my bandmate Lauren just started singing one of the songs from it to me and making me sing it with her. It instantly brought me out of my sadness and got me ready to go onstage. There’s something really infectious about the positivity in KKB’s music."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"One artist that many people don’t know about is Connie Converse. The album How Sad How Lovely was put together from some live recordings. It’s a great album and she’s a really great songwriter."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"Spit In The Face Of People Who Don’t Want To Be Cool by The Beets. The Beets and Juan Wauters have really great visuals/music videos/album art, which is often done by the artist Matthew Volz. I really love his style!"

The record with my favourite title is…

"Whatever Will Happen by iji. This album is beautiful. I like the title because it evokes this feeling of possibility and openness. That’s something that I also feel when I’m listening to this band."

The last record I bought was…

"My most recently acquired album is Yes and No by Anna Mcclellan. Actually, I didn’t buy it, she gave it to me because I did some backup vocals on it. This album is soooo special and I’m very excited that it is finally out. She’s one of my favourite songwriters."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2018 is…

"Whatever the new Vagabon record is going to be! I have had the pleasure of hearing some of the demos for it and they are amazing and get stuck in my head for days at a time. I can’t wait to hear what they turn into as a record."

The greatest record of all time is…

"No such thing!! It just depends on what you like and what your life is like at any given time. Sometimes the greatest record of all time is Exile In Guyville by Liz Phair. Sometimes it is La Grande Cantatrice Malienne vol 3 by Nahawa Doumbia. Sometimes it is Lucky Leaves by Krill. Every album is the greatest album of all time to someone!"

Frankie Cosmos releases her new album Vessel on March 30th.
