My Record Collection by Gabriella Cilmi

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of singer Gabriella Cilmi, let's see what she picks out for us...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"On Saturdays, I would help out at my Dad's salon. I would make tea and coffee, sweep hair off the floor and act sweet to the clients. In exchange, I was given a little bit of cash and went to the shopping centre across the road to buy CDs."

"I’m pretty sure the first record I bought with my own money was Enema of the State by Blink 182. My favourite track was 'Aliens Exist', hearing that was one of the most exciting sounds I had ever heard."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"It’s a tie between Led Zeppelin II and Houses of the Holy. The first Led Zeppelin tune I’d ever heard was 'Whole Lotta Love'. Between the riff and the howl I was hooked and decided I wanted to grow up to be just like Robert Plant. Hair and all."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"Probably Led Zeppelin's Houses of the Holy. When the iPod came out it was the first record I uploaded and it was with me during every bus ride to school, every long car journey (I’m Australian, every car journey is long) and every walk to my Grandma's house. It was a musical bible of sorts. My favourites are 'No Quarter' and 'Over the Hills and Far Away' ."

The record that always makes me feel good is…

"For me, this has to be Astral Weeks by Van Morrison. It’s the most magical album."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"Either Astral Weeks or if I feel like I want to wallow in it for a while I’ll go for something like Skeleton Tree by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. I love the simplicity of the synth that drives 'I Need You'. His vocal is raw and the melody is beautiful."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"Jesus was a Cross Maker on Judee Sill’s self-titled album. When I’m listening to the song I feel like I’m being expertly guided through a maze. The melodies and the lyrics are just TOO good. Judee was introduced to me by a fellow songwriter, James Walsh from the band Starsailor."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"My brother recently bought the vinyl Sweetheart of the Rodeo by The Byrds. I want to steal it and put it on a wall. It’s also a great record."

The record with my favourite title is…

"The Gilded Palace of Sin by The Flying Burrito Brothers. Top album name and possibly the best band name of all time."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"It's 'Despasito'. Don’t hurt me..."

The last record I bought was…

"Better Oblivion Community Centre. Turns out Conor Oberst and Phoebe Bridgers are a great duo as well. Went to see them play recently and it was fabulous!"

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2019 is…

"The new Bedouine record Bird Songs of a Killjoy is out and can’t wait to give it a spin when the vinyl arrives."

The greatest record of all time is…

"I’ll give you four of the greatest records of all time. They are Led Zeppelin's Houses Of The Holy, Van Morrison's Astral Weeks, Cat Stevens' Tea For The Tillerman and Janis Joplin's Pearl. I’m really sorry. I can’t choose only one!"

Gabriella Cilmi's new single 'Ruins' is out now.
