My Record Collection by Gary Go

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of electro-popper Gary Go. Let's see what he goes for...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"It was Portishead's self-titled, but I ended up returning it and put money towards The White Album double CD by The Beatles."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"Radiohead's OK Computer. What a fantastic album."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"Technically my new album LOVE LOST FREEDOM FOUND. That's just because when you’re working on something you tend to listen to it an awful lot while making it. Other than that, probably it's OK Computer or My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy by Kanye West."

The record that always makes me feel good is…

"This is the Let’s Dance album by David Bowie, especially the song ‘Modern Love’. Love it."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"I don’t have a go-to album for this purpose. It would be wise of me to find one. Any suggestions?"

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"I love the album Carrie and Lowell by Sufjan Stevens. It’s a masterpiece. If you know it, you’ll rate it highly. And if you don't, you should."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"Kanye West's Yeezus is pretty memorable. Sometimes simplicity works best."

The record with my favourite title is…

"It's Fiona Apple’s ‘When the Pawn…’ Or to give it it's full title:

"When the pawn hits the conflicts he thinks like a king

What he knows throws the blows when he goes to the fight

And he'll win the whole thing 'fore he enters the ring

There's nobody to batter when your mind is your might

So when you go solo, you hold your own hand

And remember that depth is the greatest of heights

And if you know where you stand, then you know where to land

And if you fall it won't matter, cause you'll know that you're right”

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"Baby Shark! I don’t even understand how this song got momentum. You see the memes before you’ve ever heard the song. It makes no sense. For a long time I thought it was a theme song to a TV show by the same name, but no. It’s a stand-alone song that became an empire. Congrats to the creators..."

The last record I bought was…

"It was Jack Peñate's After You. Great to have him back."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2020 is…

New Kanye. Also new music from Naaz, Celeste and Remme.

The greatest record of all time is…

One of the most honest and introspective records of all time is ‘I Am A Bird Now’ by Antony And The Johnsons.
