My Record Collection by Gretta Ray

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of Australian singer Gretta Ray, let's see what she picks out for us...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"I’m not 100% sure that I bought it with my own money, but Fearless by Taylor Swift was one of the first records I found for myself independently, outside of my parents' record collection."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"On A Clear Night by Missy Higgins made me want to work in the music industry as an artist, and spend my career making full-length albums."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"So many, but when I first discovered Saves The World by MUNA I've listened to it so ridiculously regularly."

The record that always makes me feel good is…

"Go Father In Lightness by Gang Of Youths, because I have a lot of great memories associated with those songs, having toured with them a few times."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"Once I Was An Eagle by Laura Marling, her songs are full of wise words and ‘big sisterly’ advice. I will always find comfort in her records."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"Break Mirrors by Blake Mills is one of the most perfect records in my opinion."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"The cover art for Maisie Peters’ debut record, probably. It has so perfectly captured her personality and the overall energy of that record."

The record with my favourite title is…

"Heard It In A Past Life by Maggie Rogers. I love this record so much, and think that the title made it all the more inviting to listen to again and again in the way that I did when it first came out!"

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"I think when Positions by Ariana Grande came out, I was so attached to Sweetener and thank u, next, that it took me a moment to get around it."

The last record I bought was…

"The Art of Pretending to Swim by Villagers. I’ll never forget the first time that I heard the track ‘Again’ on this album, driving through North America on tour. It’s a great record."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2021 is…

"The new Kacey Musgraves record, whatever it may be called!"

The greatest record of all time is…

"It's Raising Sand by Alison Krauss and Robert Plant, without a doubt. I listened to this record a lot when I was younger and think it’s the most beautifully produced record, with such variety and it’s so evocative. A completely timeless record!"

Gretta Ray's new album, Begin To Look, is released on Friday (August 27th).
