My Record Collection by Jake Isaac

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of elegant soulman Jake Isaac, let's have a look at what he's picked...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was...

"This was a rare Live recording of Billie Holiday. I used to play the drums and was a crazy fan of jazz drumming. It was the only record I could afford at the time from a random old record shop in Streatham."

The record that made me want to be in a band was...

"Michael Jackson's BAD. Every groove mad me wanna dance. I legit think he should've asked me to play the drums for him, would've been a madness."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"See the above. So good!"

The record that always makes me feel good is...

"This has to be, Paul Simon's Graceland record, we had it in the house on record and we also had it on tape. Every long drive we ever did on a motorway my old man blasted this!"

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is...

"When was having a crap day, I actually turned back to my first Billie Holiday record, but not for the music, but for her voice."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is...

"It has to be James Brown Live at the Apollo. Just don't really think people really appreciate how timeless and ahead of its time that record was. I'd definitely buy that record all over again."

The record with my favourite cover art is...

"Don't know about album cover, but my favourite cover song is definitely 'I Love You Porgy'. Covered by Nina Simone. James Brown also did a version of it on an earlier record of his."

The record with my favourite title is...

"Actually, my favourite title AND favourite front cover of a record has to be Prince's Purple Rain. Absolute Genius!"

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is...

"For some reason, I could never get into Fleetwood Macs' Rumours record. Maybe I need to try that one again..."

The last record I bought was...

"It was Reggae legend Burning Spear LIVE. Absolute fire!"

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2018 is...

"Still hoping that Jessie Ware puts her Glasshouse Album on Vinyl. Would defo purchase that."

The greatest record of all time is...

"Easy. Michael Jackson BAD."

Jake Isaac's debut album Our Lives is out now and available here in hmv's online store.
