My Record Collection by JJ Wilde

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of rocker JJ Wilde, let's dig into her choices...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"It was a long time ago, but I believe the first record I bought was Damien Rice's O."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"It was live records and recordings that really made me want to be a musician and be in a band. One recording that really impacted me when I was young was a VHS of Led Zeppelin live that my parents had. I would rewind it to 'Black Dog' and listen to it over and over. But my favourite live record of all time is Rod Stewart’s Coast To Coast: Overture and Beginners."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen. It lived on my record player for three months in my first apartment."

The record that always makes me feel good is…

"I’ve been loving Women In Music Pt. III by HAIM. 'Gasoline' and 'The Steps' are my favourite songs on the album. I love the powerful female presence in the lyrics - they’re a bunch of badass women!"

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"If I’m feeling down and I want to embrace the feelings, then I’ll listen to Jason Isbell’s 'Speed Trap Tow' or 'Cover Me Up' or Donovan Woods’ Both Ways. But if I’m feeling down and I want to feel better then I listen to anything by Still Woozy or Swimming by Mac Miller."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"Second Sight by Hey Rosetta! I don’t think it got the recognition it deserved and I’m still upset they broke up!"

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is iconic."

The record with my favourite title is…

"I don’t know if it’s my favourite of all time, but Sad Hunk by Bahamas is a great, funny title!"

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"This might be an unpopular opinion but I don’t personally connect with Barenaked Ladies. They have some funny songs - I like the Kraft Dinner mention in “If I Had $1,000,000” - but the rest of the album Gordon isn't my taste."

The last record I bought was…

"Sun Leads Me On by Half Moon Run. I loved their first record Dark Eyes, I found it really inspiring. I think Sun Leads Me On is a nice elevation in sound, to me, it sounded lighter and more positive. Some of my favourites on the record are 'The Debt' and 'Devil May Care.'"

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2022 is…

"There’s so many! I’m looking forward to releases from Big Thief, The Lumineers, Elvis Costello, Bonobo, and Jack White, just to name a few."

The greatest record of all time is…

"I know it’s a cliche but maybe that’s because it actually is the greatest record...Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon."
