My Record Collection by Lydia's Shawn Strader

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of reformed Arizona indie types Lydia and their guitarist Shawn Strader, let's see what he goes for...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"I grew up living in between Los Angeles and San Diego, so West Coast hip-hop was everywhere. When I was seven, my dad told me I could spend roughly $10 on whatever I wanted at the store. Lo and behold, Snoop Dogg’s Doggystyle was fresh out, and prominently displayed in the shop. He had a pretty good laugh when I said I wanted that cassette. And he let me buy it. Love you, Dad."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"Not so much an album as an artist. Michael Jackson. Thriller, Off the Wall and plenty of the Jackson 5 jams. His music videos, dancing, melodies, and rhythms. Today MJ is still my idol."

The record I've played more than any other is...

"Anything Kanye West. Graduation changed the way I understand and listen to music. Matt Keller, who plays keys in Lydia, and I used to cruise all over Arizona listening to that record on repeat. Without a doubt, Graduation and Kanye West are a great influence on our sound."

The record that always make me feel good is…

"These days, Bruno Mars’ '24K Magic'. You can’t deny the incredible vibes surging through every track of that record..."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"Coldplay's Parachutes. Talk about sad! I also appreciate their more recent record Ghost Stories. And gotta give more love to Kanye, 808s and Heartbreaks is legendary."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"Kings of Convenience's Riot on an Empty Street. Anytime I meet someone new who loves those boys’ tunes like I do is an immediate indication that we’ll be getting along just fine."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"To Pimp a Butterfly from Kendrick Lamar stands out. He’s an incredibly thoughtful artist, and that thoughtfulness is wildly present in the cover art spanning his discography."

The record with my favourite title is…

"I like it when you sleep for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it from The 1975, I mean, I had a pretty goddamn good laugh when that one came out. And, you know, it’s sweet."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"You know that kind of superstar era of emo music? The early 2000s, I just don’t get it. But if I had to name one sound, it’s Danzig. No hate, I have only appreciation. But I really just don’t get it."

The last record I bought was…

"Kanye West's Life of Pablo and I’m actually going to go buy the new Pusha T, Ye and the Kid Cudi split now."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2018 is…

"Kanye already dropped, and so did the records he produced. So now that those are out: Childish Gambino. Is Drake dropping a new record? What about The 1975? John Mayer?"

The greatest record of all time is…

"That’s heavy. Is there such a thing? Music is life, but it’s all so different. Beatles - Abbey Road. Michael Jackson - Thriller. Kanye West - Graduation. Phil Collins - Face Value. There’s so much to choose from, fortunately. And that’s a great thing."

Lydia's new album Liquor will be released in July.
