My Record Collection by Martin Solveig

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of superstar DJ Martin Solveig, let's dive in...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"Prince's Alphabet Street. I knew about Prince’s music, but the cover had a lot to do with it. I think it’s still one of the best record cover shots."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"The Strokes' Room On Fire. That’s the band I wanna be a part of, I could play the shaker..."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"D’Angelo’s Brown Sugar. He definitely brought something fresh and new to soul music."

The record that always makes me feel good is…

"Frank Sinatra, the big band has an instant old Hollywood musicals effect that takes in you in a time and place where nothing seemed to matter."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"Bjork's Dancer In The Dark. I like to fight fire with fire, it’s utterly sad so it helps you put things in perspective. It’s as beautiful as it is emotional."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"I only listen to blockbusters..."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"Fela’s cover art by Lemi Ghariokwu is a must."

The record with my favourite title is…

"Four Tet - 'The Track I've Been Playing That People Keep Asking About and That Joy Used in His RA Mix and Daphni Played on Boiler Room’, no need for explanations!"

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"Michel Sardou's Les Lacs Du Connemara. People say it's an absolute French classic, never understood why, but you know, there’s no accounting for taste..."

The last record I bought was…

"Billy Eilish’s 'You Should See Me With A Crown', there’s something deep, dark and penetrating about it that I like."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2018 is…

"Madonna’s, she’s working again with Mirwais. Their previous collab gave birth to American Life and I can’t wait to listen to their new baby."

The greatest record of all time is…

"I’m a huge Beatles fan so I’d say Abbey Road because the band broke up right after this one at the absolute height of their powers. A very last musical breath during which they put aside their differences to craft a true masterpiece."
