My Record Collection by Nathan Gray

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of Boysetsfire frontman Nathan Gray. Let's see what he goes for...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"The first record I ever bought was Bad Brains' I Against. I got it from a used record store in a Pensacola, Florida. I was just getting into punk, and this album blew me away."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"This was Rick Springfield’s - Working Class Dog. I mean... honestly... I looked into Rick Springfield because 10-year-old me had a crush on my friend’s mom and she loved Rick Springfield. But then I heard 'Jessie’s Girl' off this album and immediately wanted to be in a band."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"Bad Religion’s Suffer is easily the record that has gotten the most play from me. It’s a timeless punk album. Absolutely perfect in every way."

The record that always makes me feel good is…

"The Swellers's Ups and Downsizing always puts me in a great mood. Something about the feel of that album that gets my blood pumping."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"Tom Petty's Wildflowers. This album just gets me. When I’m feeling down this album makes me feel not so alone, and like I can rise back up out of anything."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"I think Hüsker Dü’s Warehouse Songs and Stories is incredibly underrated. I love that album."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors cover has been a favourite of mine since I was little. Not even sure why. I just associate it with a good time in my life."

The record with my favourite title is…

"John Legend's Darkness and Light. Great album, great title, great meaning and purpose."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"Led Zeppelin - IV. I just don’t care much for Led Zepplin. Folks rave about them, but it just doesn’t do it for me."

The last record I bought was…

"Bob Mould - Body of Song. Not my favourite Bob Mould album, even though 'Paralyze' is an excellent song, but it is the last one I bought."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2020 is…

"Spanishlovesongs - Brave Faces Everyone. Good folks, great music. I look forward to seeing how things go for them in 2020."

The greatest record of all time is…

"The Muppets & John Denver – A Christmas Together. No explanation needed..."

Nathan Gray's new album Working Title will be released on January 31st.
