My Record Collection by Shirley Ballas

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of Strictly Come Dancing judge Shirley Ballas, let's see what she picks out...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was...

"It was 'Dancing Queen' by ABBA. It's one of my favourite songs and something that I have danced to for most of my career."

The record that made me want to be on stage was...

"Wheels, and that was a Cha Cha Cha, and that's the first song I heard at seven years old when I was in the Brownies and I looked through that little window and I thought I have to dance, I fell in love with that music, whenever I hear it I go back to being my seven-year-old self."

The record I've played more than any other...

"Roses and Violets by Alexander Jean, it's the most beautiful Viennese Waltz and the lyrics are stunning."

The record that always makes me feel good...

"I have a go-to record which I Cha Cha Cha to around my kitchen and that's called 'Get My Name', it grips me every time and that's by my son Mark Ballas."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is...

"I think when I'm feeling low I like to put on The Carpenters Music and listen to that beautiful brother and sister duet because I just find it really reaches points in your heart and it's beautiful and uplifting, I love their music."

The record that makes me want to dance...

"There's a lot of them really from 'Get My Name' to the beautiful Viennese Waltz by Alexander Jean, Roses and Violets, to Dancing Queen, there's so many of them I couldn't pick one.  I just love music and if music comes up with a good beat to dance to, I love it."

The record with my favourite title is...

"Blood On The Dancefloor by Michael Jackson. It's brilliant."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time...

"Anything with Leo Sayer, I think Leo Sayer's music which I was working out to this morning, I think he was probably the one of the most underrated artists of all time."

The record with My favourite cover art is...

"Rumours by Fleetwood Mac. I just think it's so iconic."

The record I can't understand why anyone loves...

"I think it's anything house music related - I don't get it at all, if I'm at a party and they start playing it, I leave the dancefloor."

The last record I bought...

"I got 'Dreams', the Fleetwood Mac cover that Alexander Jean did that went to number one on the singer-songwriter chart in the US. It's amazing."

The greatest record of all time...

"It's The Carpenters' We've Only Just Begun. It is the greatest song for me of all time because that song I used to sing to my son when he was born all the way up until he didn't want to sit and hear me sing it anymore, and then it went on to be the song I danced to at his wedding and when I turned 60, he recorded that song with his wife and they sang it to me and it was heartfelt."

"Any day I miss him, I can go to Mark's Instagram page and I can hear that song with his beautiful wife singing the lyrics. If Mark hears it when he's out and about, he can't even listen to it because he misses his mum so much so it's a very very special piece of music for my son and me."

Strictly Come Dancing's new DVD, Shirley & Craig’s Perfect 10, is out now from hmv's online store.
