My Record Collection by Sofi Tukker

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of New York dance oddballs Sofi Tukker, let's see what they pick out...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

Sophie (Hawley-Weld): "This was Avril Lavigne's Let Go. Her's was also the first concert I ever went to. I dressed just like her and wore the tie and everything."

Tucker (Halpern): "50 Cent's Get Rich or Die Tryin'. Still one of the best CDs ever. That s**t is so good."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

Sophie: "This would have been Spice Girls - Spice. Watching Spice World was a real game changer. I spent most of my weekends during childhood making up choreography and redoing Spice girls music videos or re-enacting Spice World. I was Sporty Spice or Ginger Spice."

Tucker: "Sum 41's All Killer No Filler. I was in a garage band in middle school and we were basically a blink-182 and Sum 41 cover band."

The record I've played more than any other is…

Sophie: "Feist - Metals. I used to walk around college with huge headphones blasting this record on repeat, sometimes dancing, sometimes crying."

Tucker: "Once again, 50 Cent's Get Rich or Die Tryin'. Same as the above, it’s still one of the best CDs ever. So good."

The record that always makes me feel good is…

Sophie: "Has to be Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories. It came out during a summer in college when I was living in New York and living my best life, dancing around the city making new friends. It's the soundtrack to a really fun time."

Tucker: "I agree. It makes me think about certain nights in college when I would just listen to it over and over again."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

Sophie: "Nils Frahm's The Bells It is so calming. I especially love listening to it when I'm in the bath. I find it soothing and it will let me cry if I need to or just exhale and then I become so chill that I'm not down anymore."

Tucker: "Aqua's Aquarium. Yeah, it's hard to be sad listening to that s**t."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

Sophie: "I'd say this is João Gilberto - Voz e Violão. It is so simple, so sparse. It's my favourite way to listen to all the classic bossa nova songs that I love to sing. There's so much complexity and cool rhythms in the guitar. It really is what made me fall in love with Portuguese."

Tucker: "The Dream Girls Soundtrack. Oh my god. I dare you not to cry listening to Jennifer Hudson's voice."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

Sophie: "FKA Twigs – LP 1. I remember when this came out because it was everywhere in New York. It was so iconic and the colours are so good. It's so simple."

Tucker: "Aqua – Aquarium. It's iconic. The colours and the fisheye lens."

The record with my favourite title is…

Sophie: "SZA's CTRL. I love the way the concept really runs through the whole album and she has her relatives speaking about Control in the transitions between songs. Plus "Ctrl" is a cool way to spell it. It's something we see every day, but don't even think about."

Tucker: "Blink-182 – Enema of The State. I didn't know what an enema was for the first year I was obsessed with this album. My mom didn't have the heart to tell me that my favourite album was about a thing that goes up your butt."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

Sophie: "For me, this is Aqua's Aquarium. Tucker always blasts it on long car rides. He can play whatever he wants because he is usually driving and I can appreciate it, but only in very small doses."

Tucker: "Pentatonix - Pentatonix. The A cappella thing is not for me. I respect it, I couldn’t do it, but not for me."

The last record I bought was…

Sophie: "It was Natalia Lafourcade – Musas. It's probably my favourite album from last year. I put it on when I'm in ANY mood. One of the songs has been my alarm clock for a year and I'm still not sick of it. This album makes me love Mexico even more. Natalia is a delight. She makes me so happy."

Tucker: "Nora En Pure – Polynesia. We have become friends with her recently and love what she says. Her song 'Come With Me' was an initial inspiration for me when I just starting to make music."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2019 is…

Sophie: "Sofi Tukker!  It's exactly the music I want to make and hear right now!"

Tucker: "Me too, it's our next one. I've already heard it and it's flames!"

The greatest record of all time is…

Sophie: "Buena Vista Social Club. I grew up listening to this record almost every Sunday morning. My parents were obsessed with it and I totally get why! It brings me back to really happy times and I distinctly remember watching the documentary about how they made the record in Cuba. It's one of the coolest stories of music ever!"
