My Record Collection by Tenille Townes

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of rising country star Tenille Townes, let's see what she comes up with...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"I was obsessed with Shania Twain and so excited when her record Come On Over came out. I bought my own copy and got a couple for Christmas presents and kept one in the vehicle, one by the family kitchen stereo, and one in my room. I loved singing along to those songs so much!"

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"My dad is a huge fan of U2 and we used to drive around listening to Joshua Tree and singing all those songs at the top of our lungs. We felt like we were part of the band driving around with that record!"

The record I've played more than any other is…

"I've got six CD spots in my Tacoma, and three of them are Lori McKenna records. I think the one I've listened to the most is Lorraine. That record is a work of art and I feel like I learn more about the craft of songwriting every time I listen to it."

The record that always makes me feel good is…

"Something about Keith Urban's music always has a way of lifting my spirits. It's like you can hear his joy coming through as he sings. I'd say Love, Pain and the Whole Crazy Thing is my favourite."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"When I'm feeling sad, my heart is usually in a place where it wants to feel understood. Give Up The Ghost by Brandi Carlile is one that always feels like a soundtrack for my emotions when I'm feeling down. Her voice is just ridiculous."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"Flaming Red by Patty Griffin. The sonic imprint of that record is remarkable to me. I love the rollercoaster from 'Flaming Red' to 'Peter Pan' and the songs and the way that Patty communicates feels like it's opening a door in a heart to meet you right where you are and say just what you need to hear. I love this record so much."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"I love the artwork for Brother's Osborne's Skeletons. The silhouette through the keyhole feels like such a metaphor for everyone's story waiting inside..."

The record with my favourite title is…

"I love the way Adele named her records 19, 21, and 25 as windows into those seasons and ages of her life. What a time capsule and an invitation as a listener. What a legend she is."

The last record I bought was…

"My friend Patrick Droney just put out a record called State of the Heart. I've been looking forward to hearing the collection of his songs on that record for a while and it is a beautiful adventure to listen to from the first song to the last."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is...

"Aqua! I used to jam to their whole Aquamarine record as a kid but now I feel like I just don’t understand it!”

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2021 is…

"I've been a huge fan of Wrabel's for a while. He's been working on his record for a long time, and I can't wait to hear it this fall. We've been writing songs over zoom together this past year and I'm so thankful to know him and to create music together! There's a song we wrote together for his project that's on the album and I feel so honoured to be a part of it as a writer!"

The greatest record of all time is…

"I think I'd have to say Rumours. Fleetwood Mac. That record will stand the test of all time. I really think they found magic working on those songs in the time of history that they did, and it just always makes me feel good to listen to it. I used to listen to Landslide over and over with my Dad so that record feels close to my heart. What an iconic record and band."
