My Record Collection by The Holydrug Couple's Ives Sepúlveda

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of Chilean psychedelic misfits The Holydrug Couple and their singer/guitarist Ives Sepúlveda. Let's have a look then...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"It was Stereolab - Transient Random-Noise Bursts with Announcements. I had some records before this, but they were gifts from my parents because I was too little to have money to buy albums. I hadn't listened to Stereolab before, but I had read the name in a music magazine. I'm not sure why I chose to buy this, but it was a great choice."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"Nirvana - Nevermind. This was one of the first records I owned. It drove me crazy as a child. I became a fan of them and I had a VHS with a compilation of interviews and concerts. I was in love with their energy and their attitude. Because of them, I knew I wanted to hold a guitar and sing in front of an audience."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"Air and their soundtrack to The Virgin Suicides. I think I found this through the movie, probably. I used to listen to it almost every night before going to sleep when I was in high school. Now I still spin it at any hour of the day or night."

The record that always makes me feel good is…

"This is T Rex's Electric Warrior. I really love this record, it has such unique energy and magic. It always makes me feel great."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"It'd have to be The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds. This album embraces my sadness and melancholia and turns it into a new lighter feeling of hope. I enjoy it so much that it makes me happy again."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"This is Can - Ege Bamyasi. This album is amazing, and it's sad to find it hidden behind waves of 'other' music that I don't like that much. It will be always a sure recommendation."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"Fleetwood Mac - Rumours. I really love this cover. It's really mysterious and magical and dark. And it's a classic also."

The record with my favourite title is…

"Primal Scream - Screamadelica. My favourite title, my other favourite cover, one of my favourite albums of all time."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"I'd have to say Pink Floyd - The Wall. I've always fought with my own opinion on Dark Side Of The Moon, sometimes love, sometimes hate. But with The Wall it is impossible. It's just senseless to me - exaggeratedly pretentious. And don't forget that it comes with a movie and a Dad saying, 'Now, this is music''."

The last record I bought was…

"It was Los Jaivas - Si tu no estas. I was in a flea market 2 weeks ago and I found this gem in its Chilean cassette edition. Is a weird album for Los Jaivas, but so beautiful."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2018 is…

"I would really be happy to hear a new Lou Reed album but I know that's not possible. I'm really not looking for any new record, to be honest."

The greatest record of all time is…

The Velvet Underground & Nico - The Velvet Underground. It's the best, but I've got nothing more to say that hasn't been said."
